5 Common Home Invaders of Missouri

The weather is cooling, and the leaves are beginning to turn. What a wonderful time of year the Fall season is! But, with fall comes the onslaught of relentless pests trying to invade your home. They're seeking shelter for the winter months and your home is the ideal location providing warmth, darkness, and food. This week, Best Pest Control is sharing with you 5 common home invaders you'll likely run into this fall in Missouri.

House Centipedes
House centipedes like the cool, damp, environment found in places such as bathrooms, basements, and crawl spaces. They feed on other insects such as a bed bugs, cockroaches, spiders, termites, silverfish and other pests. Like most insects, they are very crafty when it comes to getting indoors. House centipedes will seek out a place that is warm and where they can hide and seek prey. They will get in under doors, through cracks and just about any opening. They are very small and narrow, so the space doesn’t have to be very big.

Millipedes
Though not harmful, millipedes can be a nuisance. Millipedes love damp spaces because they require moisture to live. That's why you'll mostly find them around your crawl spaces, damp basements, cellars and sliding glass doors/windows-if you find them inside your home at all. Millipedes much prefer the outdoors, making their homes under mulch, compost, stones and leaf piles.

Ground Beetles
Ground beetles are common next to building foundations where they spend the day hidden in loose soil, or under stones, wood, leaves, or debris. They may find their way indoors looking for places to hide during the day. They're most active at night, and are attracted to the bugs that are attracted to porch lights. That's why when you walk outside, it might seem like you're being swarmed by ground beetles on your patio or porch.

Crickets
The most common home invading crickets we see in Missouri are field crickets, house crickets, and ground crickets. Crickets invade homes most often during the fall in response to cooler nighttime temperatures. They are also attracted to lights at night, which often brings them near buildings. Once inside, they feed on and cause damage to items such as cotton, linen, wool, silk and fur. Minimize cricket habitat near your home by eliminating rocks, stacked boards, firewood, overgrown vegetation, and other types of clutter.

Scorpions
While many people may not associate Missouri with scorpions, those of us who live at the Lake are all too familiar with them. Scorpions are sometimes found in buildings and shelters, as well as under piles of wood, brush, or garbage. Generally nocturnal predators, striped bark scorpions prefer soft-bodied prey such as spiders, cockroaches, ants, crickets, beetles, and butterflies.
