How to Help Get Rid of Mice
Now that the weather is starting to really cool down, critters will be looking for ways to gain entry into your home to stay warm. But hey, can you blame them? Best Pest Control knows that mice are pesky little creatures that can cause all sorts of problems once they are inside of your home. If you have a mice problem, the best pest control at the Lake of the Ozarks has a few methods to deal with the infestation.
Eliminate Entry Points
Rodent-proofing your home is a great way to stop a mice infestation from growing or even starting in the first place. You can defend your home from mice by eliminating points of entry and easy access. This can be difficult since a mouse has the ability to squeeze itself into even the smallest of openings. A good rule of thumb to follow is if you can fit a pencil or dime through a crack or opening, a mouse will more than likely be able to squeeze through.
You should seal cracks in the foundation as well as openings in the walls. You should avoid using plastic, rubber, wood, or anything else a mouse can easily chew through. You should also get weather stripping for door and window gaps.
Use Mouse Traps
One of the best ways to help get rid of an ongoing mouse infestation is with mouse traps. The classic wooden snap traps will take care of light to moderate mouse populations, but keep in mind that most people don’t truly know the severity of a mouse infestation. You should use many traps and lay many different types of traps. Traps such as bait traps, multiple-capture live traps, and glue traps, alongside the classic wooden trap. By doing so, you will have a better chance of catching all of the mice.
Use the Best Bait for the Mouse Trap
You can use whatever food the mice have been eating in your home for bait, chances are they will continue to eat that food and be drawn to it on the trap. You can also use mouse favorites such as chocolate, peanut butter, bacon, oatmeal, or dried fruit. When you’re ready to set the trap, tie whatever bait you choose to the trigger with dental floss or fishing line. This will almost always guarantee that you will catch the mouse and it won’t just run off with the bait. You should replace the fresh bait every two days, and if food isn’t working, you can always try using nesting materials instead.
The Placement of a Trap is Critical
You should place the traps perpendicular to the walls, with the trigger facing the baseboard. This will cause the mouse to run directly into the bait as it naturally runs along the wall. Mice don’t usually travel more than ten or twenty feet from food sources and nesting areas, so place the traps anywhere you see a mouse or any signs of a mouse. You should also change the trap locations every two days, mice are naturally curious so they won’t avoid traps like rats will.
