Avoiding Pests This Christmas

It's the holiday season and many people are getting their homes ready for the upcoming festivities. However, some of our decorations can bring in some unwanted guests. Luckily, your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company has a few tips, so you can enjoy your live decorations without having to worry about pests making themselves at home.

1. Christmas Trees

A live Christmas tree is by far the biggest pest magnet during the holiday season. Not only can bugs live in the tree, they can also lay eggs in the tree. When brought into the warm house, the eggs could hatch causing a pest infestation. The USDA Christmas Tree Pest Manual lists all the pests that could be brought into your home through your Christmas tree. However, before you decide to ditch the real tree for a fake tree, take a few precautions to keep the bugs from crashing your Christmas party. First, shake your tree out before bringing it inside and carefully inspect it. After it's inside, regularly look for any signs of pests. If you see an insect, take a vacuum and suck it out.

2. Floral Decor

Mistletoe, poinsettias and miniature evergreen trees are all festive plants that add to your holiday decor. However, they can also be the perfect host for pests during the holiday season. Before you buy these plants, carefully inspect them and again before bringing them side.

3. Wreaths

Although wreaths may be on the outside of your door, every time it opens a bug could make their way inside. There are a lot of options you can choose from when it comes to holiday wreaths. Selecting one without natural elements like evergreen branches is less likely to attract insects. However, if you choose to go with a real wreath, use the same technique you would use when choosing a live tree. Inspect it carefully before buying and give it a good shake out before hanging it. In addition, every so often, give it a good shake out in the yard.

4. Pine Cones & Garland

It is very common for people to decorate their houses with pine cones and garland around the holidays. However, when these items were gathered from the great outdoors rather than store bought, they could bring in pests. To avoid having a pest infestation before the holiday festivities, inspect your garland before hanging it up whether it's real or not. For pine cones, bake them at 250 degrees for 30 - 45 minutes to get rid of bugs and sap.

5. Gingerbread Houses

Although gingerbread houses are by far one of the more delicious holiday decorations, they could also seek the attention of unwanted guests and sugar-seeking bugs. To avoid having your gingerbread house devoured by pests, wrap it up at night and put it in the fridge.
