5 Christmas Traditions From Around The World
Christmas is just in a few days and the team at Best Pest Control is getting into the holiday spirit! People all around the world celebrate Christmas, and while some traditions remain the same, there are a few unique traditions that are special to certain regions like (fake) spiders and webs in Christmas trees or decorating banana trees. Your Lake of the Ozarks pest control company takes a look at a few of these interesting traditions that people do around Christmas.
1. A Very Spidey Christmas - Ukraine
In America, it is common to decorate your Christmas tree with tinsel, ornaments, garland, but what about spiders? Ukrainians forego the "traditional" Christmas tree decorations and cover their trees with spiders and cobwebs - fake ones of course! According to the local folklore, there was a poor woman who would not afford to decorate the family's Christmas tree, The next morning, her children woke up to see the tree covered with webs and when the first light of Christmas morning touched the webs, they turned into gold and silver and the family never lived in poverty again.
2. A Kentucky Fried Christmas - Japan
Many American enjoy a delicious ham or turkey for Christmas dinner, however, in Japan, many people enjoy a bucket of the Colonel's chicken. Enjoying Kentucky Fried Chicken during the holiday season became a tradition in Japan after the Kentucky For Christmas marketing campaign in 1974. There were no Christmas traditions in Japan before, so the Kentucky For Christmas filled a void. Customers order their KFC special Christmas dinner weeks in advance or wait in line for hours to score a Kentucky Christmas dinner package that includes chicken, side dishes, cake and even wine.
3. Mischievous Yule Lads - Iceland
Children in Iceland leave their shoes on their window sill for the 13 nights before Christmas Eve. This is because Icelandic children believe they are visited by one of Iceland's 13 Santas - the Yule Lads (or yulemen). Each Yule Lad has its own personality and will try to steal and cause mischief for the children and their families. Gluggagægir likes to look through the window in search of things to steal and Pottaskefill likes to steal leftover from pots. Although the yule lads aren't all bad, if the children have been good, they will receive a small gift or candy. However, if they have been naughty, they will be left a rotten potato in their shoe.
4. Go Bananas This Christmas - India
Although only 2.3 percent of India's population celebrate Christmas, because of the amount of people who live there, it's still 25 million people who observe this holiday. There are some traditions that are the same there, such as a midnight mass and gift-giving. However, there is one thing that stands out about Christmas in India and that is the absence of fire or pine trees. Because of the lack of "Christmas trees," they usually will decorate banana and mango trees instead. They will even use the leaves of those trees to decorate their homes.
5. Send A Letter To Santa (Literally) - Canada
Although many people believe that Santa lives at the North Pole, his mailing address is actually in Canda. In Canda, postal codes are alphanumeric, so Santa's postal code is H0H 0H0 (with zeros instead of the letter 'o'). Letters that went unnoticed by parents and mailed used to end up undelivered because there was no address for Kris Kringle. However, for the last 30 years, Canada Post volunteers (who's numbers are in the thousands) have been helping Santa reply to the million of letters he receives every year from children around the world.
