1. Moths are great impersonators.


When you think of a moth, you probably think of the little light brown flying insects that are attracted to your porch light. They may seem pretty boring. However, to avoid being eaten by other predators, some moths have evolved to look like other insects, such as wasps, praying mantis and even tarantulas.

2. There are an estimated 150,000 to 500,000 different species of moths.


Moths outnumber butterflies, their nearest relative. There are 10 to 15 times more species of moths than butterflies. There are more than 11,000 species of moths in the US alone, which is more than all the bird and mammal species in North America combined.

3. Some adult moths don’t eat.


While some moths are an important part of pollination and eat the nectar of flowers, some don’t eat at all. The adult Luna moth doesn’t even have a mouth, which makes it a little difficult to consume food. After emerging from its cocoon, it lives for a week and its sole purpose is to mate and lay eggs.

4. Some moths are really big and some are really small.


Moths vary greatly in size. The Atlas moth has a wingspan of about 10 inches and has a surface area of 62 square inches. It is considered to be the largest moth. On the other hand, the Stigmella maya is a micro-moth. Its wingspan measures just 1.2 millimeters. It was discovered in the Yucatan in Mexico.

5. Some moths are famous.


The death-head hawk moth got its start in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It then went on to the leading role in both The Silence of the Lambs and The Mothman Prophecies. This famous moth gets its name from the scull-shaped pattern on its back. It is also known to emit a loud squeaking noise when irritated.
