5 Pests To Be Thankful For This Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for what we have and there is a lot to be thankful for this season. Many of us are compiling a mental list of all the blessings in our lives. However, what if we told you there are a few insects you may want to add to that list? While there are many pests that can wreak havoc on our lives, such as termites or bed bugs, there are many that are beneficial our environment. Your Lake of the Ozarks pest control experts are here to help you identify which insects you should be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

1. Ladybugs

Ladybugs, or lady beetles, are considered to be one of the most beneficial garden bugs. Ladybugs feed on insects that can wreak havoc to a beautiful garden like aphids, mealybugs and other destructive insect pests. They also can lay their eggs among the aphids or other prey, so when they hatch, the larvae can feed on them as well.

2. Fireflies

Whether you refer to them as fireflies or lightning bugs, you don't want to get rid of these insects. They don't bite, they don't attack you, they don't carry diseases, they aren't poisonous and they don't even fly very fast. However, they do feed on other insect larvae, snails, slugs and earthworms, even as larvae themselves. These insects also are helping humans, as they contain luciferin and luciferase, two rare chemicals used in research on cancer, multiple sclerosis, cystic fibrosis and heart disease.

3. Praying Mantis

Praying mantids are great to keep around your home and garden as they are a hunter. They feed on flies, mosquitoes, roaches, crickets and grasshoppers around the clock. Their large appetite will assure that your garden is free of pests. They are so beneficial that some people purchase these insects to release in their gardens.

4. Spiders

Although we don't like seeing spiders in our home and arachnophobia is one of the most common types of fear, they are very beneficial to humans. Spiders prey on insects such as roaches, earwigs, mosquitoes, flies and moths. In addition, they are essential to keeping our food supply healthy and intact. A world without spiders would result in famine.

5. Bumble Bees

Although a large group of bees around your home isn't good and will require a professional Lake of the Ozarks pest control company to remove, bees are extremely beneficial to our lives and economy. Many of the fruits and vegetables that we enjoy would not exist if it wasn't for bees pollinating them. Livestock are also heavily dependent upon bee-pollinated plants. If it wasn't for bees, the quality, availability and price of our favorite foods would all be affected.
