Best Pest Idioms Part 2

The Lake of the Ozarks' most trusted pest control company has heard just about every phrase related to bugs. In the second half of our two-part series, Best Pest Control brings you 4 more bug idioms used in day to day speech. Check out what we found!

Rat Race

1. A rat race is an endless, self-defeating, or pointless pursuit. It conjures up the image of the futile efforts of a lab rat trying to escape while running around a maze or in a wheel.

Possible Origin

The first known usage of rat race comes in the late 1930's, describing the work/life balance of individuals and cities like rats in a maze; everyone struggling to survive and get to the end or the dream, but ultimately, accomplishing nothing meaningful.

Bug Off

1. To cease bothering [someone]. Hey, bug off! Your comments are annoying. I wish you would bug off!
2. Get out! Go away! (Usually Bug off!) Bug off! Get out of my sight! Bug off and leave me alone!

Possible Origin

As with bugging someone, to bug off directly relates to someone who is rather annoying. If someone says to bug off, they are equating someone's presence to be as annoying as a fly or bug, and telling them to go away!

Bug Out

1. To pack up and leave or retreat. Orders are to bug out by oh-nine-hundred. Okay, everybody, move it! We're bugging out.
2. To get out of somewhere fast. I have to find a way to bug out of here without getting caught. Okay, the downpour has stopped. Let's bug out.

Possible Origin

This phrase became popular in the early 1930's and was used to describe people who scatter in a disorderly conduct, often without preparation. It has come to describe a certain type of bag you can keep on hand, a "bug-out bag" which is filled with items that can come in handy should you need to flee an area quickly. These bags are often associated with emergency situations and natural disasters.

Computer Bug

1. A flaw in a computer program. As soon as I get the bugs out, I can run my program.

Possible Origin

A bug found in computer code actually isn't about bugs at all! This bug is short for bugbear or bugaboo, a malicious spirit that disrupts or causes problems to people nearby. In the 15th century, engineering prototypes that had small issues were attributed to these spirits. This word was shortened to "bug" and passed on to small problems found in software in today's modern computer systems.
