3 Things To Avoid After Halloween

Halloween has come again, and all the kids are excited! Going Trick or Treating is a fun way to cap off another Fall day. Unfortunately, there are some things to avoid having pests invade after Halloween as well. If you're not careful with your treats or decorations, you'll end up having to call the best pest control company at Lake of the Ozarks to deal with the nuisances that arise.  If you clean up your decorations promptly you'll probably be able to handle the small amount of pests that come your way. Here are a few things to avoid doing in order to avoid calling the Lake of the Ozarks Best Pest Control Company:

Avoid: Throwing Pumpkins in the Yard

Pumpkins can be huge gourds. They also carry tons of nutritional value, and if they rot in the yard, they will go on to feed plants as rich fertilizer. However, Pumpkins attract other things as well. Bugs and small critters love the interior of a pumpkin. If you throw out your carved Jack O' Lantern, you've created a huge buffet for insects and other pests, and invited them into your yard.

What You Can Do:

Instead of putting the carved pumpkin out into the yard, you should think about throwing it away. There are alternatives if you're prepared; composting can create fertilizer and it decomposes the pumpkins safely and away from bugs and other pests. If you have nowhere to throw out a pumpkin taking it out into a wooded area is best, as it could attract deer, and insects.

Avoid: Leaving Candy Out

Handing out candy is an old tradition on Halloween. Some kids may snack in your yard, or drop something on your doorstep. Candy is basically pure sugar and if you know anything about ants, bees, or yellow jackets, it's that they LOVE sugar. Leaving out candy is a surefire way to invite ants into your home, or worse yet, invite a nest of yellow jackets to shack up in your yard overwinter.

What You Can Do:

Sweep off your porch, and give your yard a quick once-over, and pick up any debris. You will be preventing bugs from getting an easy source of food. Also, when you hand out your candy, watch as everyone enters and leaves your yard to make sure you catch anything that may fall from their bags.

Avoid: Leaving a Bale of Straw in the Yard

Straw that's been baled makes for a perfect harvest decoration. It also makes for a perfect hiding place and snack ground for grain eating pests and their predators. Mice, moths, and beetles alike can call a straw bale home and if it's sitting just near the house entryway, it won't be long before they seek out the warmth inside your home.

What You Can Do:

During the lifetime of the decoration, spray it down with a mixture of bleach and water (1 teaspoon bleach to 1 gallon water). This will keep the insects to a minimum and hopefully keep the pests away. When it's time to get rid of the decor, don't put it off. Just get it to the dumpster or out to a wooded area ASAP!

There are so many EASY ways to get rid of Halloween decorations; but EASY isn't always BETTER. Here at Best Pest Control, we love our work, but if the solution is as simple as throwing away that rotting pumpkin, or simply sweeping your deck, we'd much rather you take care of the problem before it exists. But if for whatever reason the bugs decide to infest, the Lake of the Ozarks best extermination company will be there to help you!
