Lawn Care Tips for the Fall Season

As we enter the month of September, some of us can't wait to be able to enjoy the cool Fall season. It's just around the corner, after all! As we near a time where leaves will begin to turn and cover the ground, we at Best Pest Control feel it's important to remind you that Fall is the best time prepare your lawn for the dormant winter months. There are a few steps that you can take in the Fall to ensure that you'll have luscious, green grass in the Spring.

Rake Up Leaves

Leaves are slowly beginning to turn in some areas, which mean that soon they will start to fall. It is important to continuously rake leaves, as leaving them on your lawn can cause some serious damage. Leaves that are left on the lawn blocks light and traps moisture, which could suffocate the grass and potentially be a breeding ground for fungal disease. It is best not to wait until all the leaves have fallen, as the leaves could become wet from rain and morning dew.

Continue To Mow

Although you may think the mowing season is over, it actually lasts throughout the fall. Grass will continue to grow, however, it will be at a much slower rate. As the season comes to an end, it is best to drop the mower's blade to the lost setting for the last two cuttings. Cutting the grass short will allow more sunlight to reach the crown of the grass, which will result in less brown spots during the winter.

Overseed The Bald Spots

Autumn is a great time to overseed (or reseed) your lawn to make it lush and full in the spring time. Having a thick, healthy lawn is a good protection against weeds. However, overseeding doesn't just fill in bare patches, it also strengthens existing grass. Fall is a good time to overseed your lawn, as the ground is still warm, there is still plenty of moisture, the nights are cool and the days are not as hot.

Aerate The Soil

Fall is the best time to aerate your lawn. Aerating allows oxygen, water and fertilizer to easily reach the grass roots. Regular aeration prevents soil from becoming compacted and covered with thatch, which is a thick layer of roots, stems and debris. Thatch could block water, oxygen and nutrients from reaching the soil. The best time to aerate is right before fertilizing so that the fertilizer can reach the roots.

Control The Weeds

Fall is the best time to fight back against weeds like dandelions, as they are taking in lots of nutrients to prepare for the harsh winters. Because they are drinking in everything that comes their way, weed killers will be most effective in the fall. If you do weed control now, they will less likely to pop back up in the spring.

Fertilize The Roots

If you are going to fertilize your lawn once a year, the best time to do it is in the fall. This is because the grass leaves grow slowly, but the roots are going quickly. In the fall, adding fertilizer allows the grass to grow deep roots and keep nutrients on reserve, so it can grow back in the spring nice and full. It is best to wait until mid to late fall to apply the fertilizer.
