5 Spots Spiders Love To Hide

No one likes to be surprised by a spider.  These tiny, silent creatures can easily sneak up on you with no warning.  Spider control is a specialty of ours, and Best Pest Control at the Lake of the Ozarks can make sure that you have as few of these little guys as possible around your home, but it always helps to know where to look for these pests.

Spiders mainly love quiet, dark spots that do not get disturbed very often.  They will do their best to stay under your radar so that they can spin their webs and keep from getting smashed.  There are hiding spots for spiders that you can check occasionally.  If you keep an eye on these spots, you just may be able to avoid a surprise attack.

Under furniture

Furniture that doesn't get moved often, like beds and couches, are perfect spots for spiders to hide.  It's dark under there and only disturbed when something accidentally rolls under.  If you are not able to move the furniture to vacuum underneath easily, at least swipe the vacuum attachment under there occasionally to pick up any stragglers.

Under the sink

Spiders need water to live, so under the sink is a wonderful place for them.  You may add or remove items under your sink occasionally, but people rarely move things around a lot under there. Fix any leaks right away, because the more water, the more likely it will attract spiders.

Lots of stuff piled together makes for lots of good hiding places for tiny creatures.  This is especially the case for clutter in areas of your home that are not used often, like closets and spare rooms.  Try to put everything away in it's proper place when you are done with it.  If the clutter never accumulates, then the spiders can't hide there.

Garages and sheds

Spiders really love these places.  Not only are they usually cluttered with all of the stuff that you are storing, but the doors are often left open to the outside.  This makes it simple for them to scurry in and out when they feel like it.

Gardens and shrubbery

You shouldn't be too surprised if you see a spider here, because outside is where they belong. You do need to be aware, though, that they could be hiding in flowers or shrubs so that you don't accidentally grab one.  Also, if you pick flowers or something out of your garden to take inside, make sure that you don't bring any spiders in with them.  It only takes a moment for a spider to jump off and run to one of the other hiding places above.

So take a peek into these spots every once in a while.  If you can keep these areas clear, then you are much less likely to be surprised by a spider when you least expect it.  Best Pest Control at the Lake of the Ozarks can take a look at your property and let you know what needs to be done.  Call for a free estimate and to find out what we can do to make sure that these uninvited guests are as unwelcome as possible.

4 Signs That Your Home MIght Have Termites

Termites cause billions of dollars in damage every year to homes.  Often you will not even be aware that they are present until they have spread to many different areas on your property and caused tons of damage.  Call upon the best pest control company in the Lake of the Ozarks to help determine if your property is at risk.  Best Pest Control has over 25 years of experience under our belts, and termite inspection and treatment is one of our specialties.  It is wise to have a termite inspection done once a year as a preventative measure, but here are four signs that you need to get it taken care of right away.

You will generally see these winged termites in the Spring when the weather is warming up and often after it rains.  This is when the young leave their nests and head out to mate and start colonies of their own.  They are small and very similar to flying ants, but there are ways to tell them apart.

  • straight waist
  • straight antennae
  • wings are the same length
  • shed their wings
  • pinched waist
  • bent antennae
  • wings are different lengths
  • do not shed their wings

The will leave their old nests by the hundreds.  You may see them flying near windows, and keep an eye out for their discarded wings.  It can be helpful to trap a few in a jar to show your pest control expert if you get the chance.  Also, watch the spiderwebs near your home.  These are great at trapping the swarmers.

Termites need a moist environment to survive.  When they are not underground or inside a piece of wood, they will build small, tube-like tunnels  out of mud and cellulose to travel in.  These may look to you like little brown straws, and can usually be found around your foundation, water pipes, crawl spaces, the attic and the basement.  A trick for determining whether or not a tube that you find is still active is to remove a piece of it.  If it is still in use, the present termites will repair the missing section.

Termites will fill in any small cracks or holes where they are building their nest.  They will use mud like a type of "cement" to block the air flow and hold in moisture.  If you notice dried dirt anyplace that it should not be, this could be what you are looking at.

Termites eat wood from the inside out, which is another reason that it is difficult to know that they are present early on.  Whenever you are inspecting your home or making small repairs, pay special attention to any wood that sounds hollow when tapped on.  If one spot sounds different than another similar piece of wood, this is definitely a sign that you should inspect for termites.

Keep a close eye on wood construction material, fences, firewood, and fallen branches.  Wood isn't always the only place that you will see termite damage though.  It can also be present in things that can remain damp, like insulation, plaster, even old books.

Termites can cost you a lot of money if not taken care of, and most insurance policies do not cover this type of damage.    If you notice any one of these signs, give Best Pest Control a call for a free estimate.  You can trust both our professionalism and expertise to get rid of any problems that are already there, and to prevent any in the future.
