Christmas Celebrations Around the World

Christmas is in a few days and the team at Best Pest Control is getting into the holiday spirit! People all around the world celebrate the Christmas holiday. There are many common traditions when it comes to Christmas, but there are a few unique traditions that are special to certain regions and areas. The best pest control company at the Lake of the Ozarks is taking a look at a few unique traditions that take place around the world.

A Very Spidey Christmas - Ukraine

In America, it is common to decorate your Christmas tree with tinsel, ornaments, and garland, but what about spiders? Ukrainians forego the "traditional" Christmas tree decorations and cover their trees with spiders and cobwebs - fake ones of course! According to the local folklore, there was a poor woman who could not afford to decorate the family's Christmas tree, so the next morning, her children woke up to see the tree covered with webs and when the first light of Christmas morning touched the webs, they turned into gold and silver and the family never lived in poverty again.

Go Bananas This Christmas - India

Only 2.3 percent of India's population celebrates Christmas, but because of India’s large population, that still about 25 million people who observe this holiday. There are some Christmas traditions that are the same there, such as a midnight mass and gift-giving. However, there is one thing that stands out about Christmas in India and that is the absence of fir or pine trees. Because of the lack of "Christmas trees", they usually decorate banana and mango trees instead. They will even use the leaves of those trees to decorate their homes.

A Kentucky Fried Christmas - Japan

Many Americans enjoy a delicious ham or turkey for Christmas dinner, however, in Japan, many people enjoy a bucket of the Colonel's chicken. Enjoying Kentucky Fried Chicken during the holiday season became a tradition in Japan after the Kentucky For Christmas marketing campaign in 1974. There were no Christmas traditions in Japan before, so the Kentucky For Christmas filled a void. Customers order their KFC special Christmas dinner weeks in advance or they have to wait in line for hours to score a Kentucky Christmas dinner package. That package includes chicken, side dishes, cake and even wine.

Mischievous Yule Lads - Iceland

Children in Iceland leave their shoes on their window sill during the 13 nights before Christmas Eve. This is because Icelandic children believe they are visited by one of Iceland's 13 Santa’s - the Yule Lads (or Yule men). Each Yule Lad has its own personality and will try to steal and cause mischief for the children and their families. Gluggagægir likes to look through the window in search of things to steal and Pottaskefill likes to steal leftovers from pots. Although the Yule Lads aren't all bad. If the children have been good, they will receive a small gift or candy. However, if they have been naughty, they will be left a rotten potato in their shoe.

Send A Letter to Santa (Literally) - Canada

Although many people believe that Santa lives at the North Pole, his mailing address is actually in Canada. In Canada, postal codes are alphanumeric, so Santa's postal code is H0H 0H0 (with zeros instead of the letter 'o'). Letters that went unnoticed by parents and mailed used to end up undelivered because there was no address for Kris Kringle. However, for the last 30 years, Canada Post volunteers (whose numbers are in the thousands) have been helping Santa reply to the millions of letters he receives every year from children around the world.
