Warm composts cannot support fly larvae, so keep the pile in the sun if possible.

If you have a dog, make sure to clean up after it. Animal feces attract lots of flies. After cleaning up, bury it, flush it, or seal it in a bag and throw it away in a trashcan.
3. Seal Trash Can Lids
Lids on trash cans should fit and seal tightly to remove the space for flies to get inside. Make sure to keep lids on indoor trash cans as well, and do not let old food sit around.
4. Remove Sitting Water
Flies are attracted to standing water. Make sure the water in your bird bath is clean and changed often. If you have anything near the house that collects water, such as buckets, old tires or trash can lids, make sure they are emptied.

Although they are unsightly, fly strips work to trap flies in the sticky glue. There are also other traps that will lure flies in with bait or pheromones and are a little more discreet than the hanging strips.
