3 Natural Remedies for Fighting Fleas

Nothing drives a house to insanity quite like having fleas. They ride in on the fur of our pets and create an infestation that is difficult to eradicate without chemicals. The best pest exterminators in Mid-Missouri can fix the situation, but we also like to offer possible pet-friendly DIY solutions as well. Before calling the #1 exterminator at the Lake of the Ozarks, try one of these natural remedies:

Create a Flea Trap Using Household Ingredients.

Fleas, Itch, infestation
When fleas enter your home, they don't just live on your pet; they drop into the carpet and lay eggs as well! Fleas can be caught using several homemade options. Our first choice uses the following materials:
  • Dish Soap
  • Warm Water
  • Tea Candles
  • Plastic Bowl
Fill the bowl with warm water and add a capful of bowl soap. Place this in the affected rooms (Make sure the animals or kids can't get to it!) and place the tea candle in the middle of the bowl. Fleas are attracted to the flame, and jump onto the bowl, but are left immobile due to the soap. Dispose of this homemade trap in the morning, along with the dead fleas.

Homemade Herbal Spray will Keep the Fleas at Bay.

bath, flea remedy, bug removal
Rather than spraying harmful chemical aerosols all over your living space, try this easy-to-make recipe. It not only gets rid of adult fleas, but destroys the larvae and eggs as well! Things you'll need:
  • Vacuum Cleaner
  • 1 Gallon Vinegar
  • 1/2 Gallon Water
  • 16 Ounces Lemon Juice
  • 8 Ounces Witch Hazel
  • Empty Spray Bottle
Combine these ingredients and pour them into the spray bottle. Vacuum EVERYTHING you can - all the furniture, the carpet, and crevices. Once complete, heavily spray down all affected areas. This should be done daily for about a week, depending on how badly infested the area is. Once the problem is under control, you can spray once every week or so to keep the fleas from entering your home.

Use the Power of Essential Oils!

Essential oils have a lot of uses around the house, including being useful as insect repellents. The most important thing to remember is that our feline friends are especially sensitive to essential oils, so if you own a cat, this tip may not be the best for you. For dogs, a drop or two of tea tree oil, lavender or citronella in the bath (along with dish soap!) can act as a natural flea repellant. Another method is to use a spray on your dog to prevent fleas from jumping on in the first place. Use the following ingredients to make your natural flea repellant:
  • 3 parts water
  • 1 part white distilled vinegar
  • 1-2 drops of tea tree oil
