There are plenty of common kitchen items that ants absolutely do not want to take back to their lair, but are safe to leave around a home with children. A few things that you can sprinkle along where you have seen trails of ants are: chili pepper, cinnamon, and mint.  These are all non-toxic and can be left out without worrying about who else is getting into them.  Also, placing used coffee grounds outside of your home where the ants are getting in will scare them away.
